Lugano by Minibus: Lakeside Villages and Mountain Railways
Lugano feels wonderfully Italian: a lakefront promenade, a car-free old town and villages along the shore that you can reach by boat. A minibus suits Ticino well, because many roads here are narrow and some are closed to big coaches.
Five minutes on the lakefront
The old town around Piazza della Riforma and Via Nassa is pedestrian. Your driver uses the signed Stop&Go bays, where five minutes is the limit: Piazza Manzoni and Piazza Rezzonico for getting on and off, Riva Vela for getting off only. Be ready at the kerb when the minibus pulls in.
After the drop-off, vehicles currently wait at the city coach park on Via Ciani, beside the AIL Arena, for up to 24 hours. Building works around Cornaredo may change the access.

Morcote and the shore road
The roads to Morcote are limited to vehicles below 10 tonnes and no longer than 10 m, so a full-size coach needs a special permit while a minibus is well within the limits. Two coach spaces in the La Costa area allow four hours, time enough for the 404 steps up to Santa Maria del Sasso and a walk in Parco Scherrer.
Swissminiatur at Melide, about 10 minutes from Lugano, has coach parking beside the park and closes for the winter.
Flying in to Lugano
Favourite stops around Lugano
- Ferrovia Monte Generoso (Capolago) — Cog railway from Capolago-Riva San Vitale station (Via Fam. Carlo Scacchi 6, Capolago) to the summit at 1,704 m and the Fiore di pietra. Reservation is compulsory for groups of 10 or more. From May to the end of October trains run 7 times a day, daily; there is also a daily service from 26 October to 8 November 2026 and from 21 December 2026 to 6 January 2027; otherwise, from 5 December 2026 to 28 March 2027, trains run only at weekends and on public holidays. The railway car park is at Via Segoma 6, Capolago (motorway exit Melide from the north, Mendrisio from the south); no coach parking is published.
- Gandria — Former fishing village at the foot of Monte Brè, reached by road or by boat from Lugano; the village centre is closed to traffic and built on narrow streets and stairs. Groups often take the boat from Lugano and walk back to Castagnola along the lake, or ride the Monte Brè funicular up and walk down to Gandria. The Swiss Customs Museum at Cantine di Gandria, on the opposite shore, is reached by boat. No official coach parking was found in Gandria.
- Lake Lugano boats (Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano) — Main timetable from 29 March to 18 October 2026, with reduced timetables until 8 November 2026. Piers in Lugano include Lugano, Paradiso and Cassarate; routes run to Gandria, Morcote, Melide Swissminiatur, Campione d'Italia, Porto Ceresio, Ponte Tresa and Porlezza. Groups that want to travel on a scheduled boat must contact the commercial office in advance; private charters for up to 600 people on 13 boats are arranged on request. Services may be suspended in bad weather or strong wind.
- Morcote — Lakeside village south of Lugano with the church of Santa Maria del Sasso, the monumental stairway of 404 steps and Parco Scherrer; the old centre is visited on foot. Coaches: 2 spaces in the "La Costa" area (Riva da la Costa) opposite the Caccia Rusca retirement home, maximum 4 hours; passenger set-down and pick-up are allowed in the same area; more coach spaces at Swissminiatur in Melide. Only coaches under 10 tonnes and up to 10 m long may use the Melide-Morcote cantonal road and the Burò-Morcote road; larger coaches need a special permit from the Canton, requested at least 7 working days ahead. Also served by the lake boats.
- Swissminiatur (Melide) — Open-air miniature park on the lake at Melide, with more than 130 miniatures. The park calendar shows it open daily 09:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30) until 8 November 2026, closed from 9 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 and reopening on 13 March 2027. Coach parking is available in the area next to the park; the park asks coach groups to contact it in advance. Melide station is about 200 m away (7 minutes by train from Lugano); the Melide Swissminiatur boat landing is about 400 m away. Motorway A2: exit Melide (southbound) or Bissone/Campione d'Italia (northbound).
- Funicolare Monte San Salvatore (Paradiso) — Valley station at Via delle Scuole 7, Lugano-Paradiso, about 500 m from the Lugano-Sud motorway exit and 5 minutes from Lugano-Paradiso station. Two cars of 60 people each, every 30 minutes, about 12 minutes to the summit. Summer season 14 March to 8 November 2026; the funicular and the summit restaurant are closed from 9 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 for renovation of the restaurant. Group rates from 10 people; special openings for groups (lunch or dinner) on request. Coach parking at the valley station is available on reservation; camper vans and caravans are not admitted.
- Funicolare Monte Brè (Cassarate) — Two sections: Lugano-Cassarate to Suvigliana (automatic car, maximum 30 people, every 15 minutes, 07:00 to 21:00) and Suvigliana to the summit of Monte Brè at 933 m (maximum 68 people, every 30 minutes from 09:00; last runs between 17:00 and 19:00 depending on the season, later on Friday and Saturday evenings in July and August). Booking is requested for groups. Closed on 25 December and from 11 January to 12 February 2027. Combined tickets with the lake boats (walk down to Gandria, boat back to Lugano) are sold. The operator offers its passengers car parking at Campo Marzio (Conza), Via Campo Marzio 1, without reservation; no coach parking is published.
- LAC and MASI Lugano — MASI has two sites: LAC (Piazza Bernardino Luini 6) and the historic Palazzo Reali (Via Canova). Opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 11:00 to 18:00, Thursday 11:00 to 20:00, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10:00 to 18:00; closed on Mondays. Guided tours for groups are arranged on request in Italian, German, French and English. Palazzo Reali is closed from 22 September to 16 October 2026 and reopens on 17 October 2026.
- Lugano old town, lakefront and Parco Ciani — The pedestrian zone covers Via Nassa, the Cathedral, Piazza della Riforma, Piazza Dante, the Quartiere Maghetti and the streets around them; coaches set passengers down at Piazza Manzoni, Piazza Rezzonico or Riva Vincenzo Vela (see coach notes). Parco Ciani (over 63,000 m² on the lakeshore, up to the mouth of the Cassarate river) is open daily 06:30 to 23:30 from March to October and 06:30 to 21:00 from November to February.

Up Monte Brè, down to Gandria
Gandria has no coach parking, and its lanes are mostly stairs. The nicest way in: the funicular from Cassarate up Monte Brè, a walk down to the old fishing village, and the boat back to Lugano. Groups are asked to book the funicular, which closes for several weeks in mid-winter.
Monte San Salvatore, in Paradiso, lets you reserve a coach space at its valley station and reopens in March after its winter break. The Monte Generoso railway at Capolago needs a reservation for ten or more.
Into Italy and towards Lake Maggiore
Como is about 40 minutes away and Milan about 1.5 hours. Locarno, Ascona and the Verzasca dam are each about 55 minutes, and the castles of Bellinzona about 30 minutes north. Lucerne is about 2.5 hours through the Gotthard road tunnel.
Questions travellers ask
Which airport should we fly into?
Milan Malpensa in Italy is about 68 km away, around 1 h 15 min, and the drive crosses the border. Zurich is about 221 km, roughly 3 h 15 min. The airport at Agno, close to Lugano, has no airline flights.
Do the lake boats run all year?
No. The full timetable runs from spring until mid-October, with a reduced service into early November. A group wanting a scheduled boat contacts the boat company in advance, and whole boats can be chartered.
Can we stop near Lugano station?
Yes. Via Basilea, beside the station, allows stops of up to an hour. From the station the funicular takes 92 seconds down to the centre, a pleasant way to start a walk.
