A car with chauffeur for the couple, the speaker or the grandparents
Sometimes the people who matter most travel apart from the group. The bride and groom on the way to the church, a keynote speaker, grandparents who would rather not climb into a minibus: an executive car with a driver takes one to three passengers, or up to eight in a larger, van-style car.
What makes it a car
Under Swiss rules, a car has at most nine seats including the driver. Hired with a chauffeur, it counts as professional passenger transport, so the driver either has a permit to carry passengers for a living, earned by passing additional exams on working-time rules and on the road, or holds a bus licence. Cantons add their own taxi and limousine rules, checked for the canton where the trip starts.

On board
- Cantons have their own taxi and limousine rules; check the canton where the service starts
- Vehicles with at most nine seats including the driver are outside the federal passenger-transport monopoly (Art. 8 Abs. 1 Bst. a VPB), and cars with at most eight passenger seats need no BAV admission as a road transport undertaking (Art. 3 Abs. 1bis Bst. a STUG)
- Trips are "professional" under ARV 2 when they are made at least twice within less than 16 days and the fare exceeds the vehicle costs and the driver's expenses (Art. 3 Abs. 1bis ARV 2)
- To obtain the permit with a category B licence the driver passes an extra theory test on drivers' hours and an extra practical driving test (Art. 25 Abs. 3 VZV)
- A driver who carries passengers professionally with a category B car needs the permit for professional passenger transport (Bewilligung zum berufsmässigen Personentransport, Art. 25 VZV); it is entered on the licence as code 121. Holders of a D or D1 licence receive it without a further test (Art. 25 Abs. 4 VZV)
- Passenger transport with hired vehicles and a chauffeur counts as professional passenger transport under ARV 2 (Art. 3 Abs. 1ter ARV 2)
At airports and venues
Cars with driver use different spots from buses. At Zurich Airport they work under a limousine-service permit and wait in area P12-100. At Geneva, the P6 coach station does not take vehicles that small, so the car uses the area for cars with driver or a car park.
Boot space is limited. For more than three passengers with luggage, choose the van-type car or a Sprinter-style minibus.
Alongside the rest of the group
The car often runs alongside minibuses on the same day: it takes the couple from the civil ceremony while guests ride in the shuttle, or brings speakers to a congress before the team arrives. Put both timetables in one request so they fit together.
Questions travellers ask
Can the car wait during the ceremony or meeting?
Yes. Give the expected length, and the driver waits or comes back at the agreed time.
How much luggage fits?
The boot takes the bags of a couple or a small party. With more cases, the van-type car is the better choice.
Can we book a car for just one leg?
Yes. Many weddings and events book the car only for the key journeys, such as the couple's arrival and their departure at night, and use minibuses for everything else.
