Interlaken by Minibus: The Jungfrau Region at Your Pace

Interlaken sits between two lakes with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau behind it, and most good days out here begin with a short drive. A minibus with a driver fits the way the region works: a few kilometres by road, then a train, a boat or a cable car for the part no road reaches.

Up to the Jungfraujoch and back another way

The quickest way to the Top of Europe starts at Grindelwald Terminal, about 35 minutes from the Höhematte. The Eiger Express and the Jungfraubahn then take about 50 minutes to the top, changes included. Your driver drops you at the gondola and can collect you in the evening from a different station.

That is the nicest way to plan it: up fast from Grindelwald, down slowly over the Kleine Scheidegg on the Wengernalpbahn to Lauterbrunnen, about 20 minutes from town by road. Book Jungfraubahn seats with the tickets; booked groups travel on reserved seats together.

Lakes, gardens and old farmhouses

On a slower day, take the Lake Brienz boat from Interlaken Ost to Iseltwald, about 40 minutes in season. Iseltwald limits coach parking to booked slots of 90 minutes, so ask the operator to plan where the minibus meets you on the lakeshore.

Ballenberg, the open-air museum by Brienz, is a 35-minute drive and has two entrances, at Hofstetten and Brienzwiler. Get dropped at one end, walk through the old farmhouses, and be picked up at the other. Schynige Platte (from Wilderswil, 10 minutes) and Harder Kulm are seasonal, so check their dates first.

When the group needs a full-size coach

Interlaken's coach rules are strict. A coach may only let people board or alight at the marked transit stops by the two stations, West and Ost, and for five minutes at most. The coach then leaves for one of the official coach parks, and several central streets are closed to coaches altogether.

For a large wedding or a conference at the Congress Kursaal, which takes up to about 1,500 people, the operator plans those stops and the parking in advance.

Further afield, and a shortcut for small groups

Kandersteg and the Oeschinensee gondola are about 1.25 hours away, Bern about an hour, Luzern about 1.5 hours over the Brünig pass, which stays open in winter.

Heading on to the Valais? The Lötschberg car train from Kandersteg to Goppenstein carries buses with up to 22 seats, so a minibus can cross by rail. A full-size coach is not carried and goes round by road instead, over the Grimsel in summer or by the motorways via Bern and Lausanne.
