Boats, Piers and a Minibus Waiting Ashore
Three places bring groups to the water's edge: the Rhine in Basel, where river cruises begin and end, and the lake piers of Lucerne and Geneva. Each page explains where a vehicle may stop and where it can take you next.
Rhine ships in Basel
Cruise ships berth at three places on two banks: St. Johann on the old-town side, Klybeckquai and Dreiländereck in the port district across the river. The stage printed on your cruise papers is therefore the first thing to send us. None of the stages publishes coach rules, so the operator confirms where the vehicle waits.
Lake boats in Lucerne and Geneva
In Lucerne the boats leave from the Bahnhofquai opposite the station, and the Inseliquai stop beside the KKL needs no voucher for setting down and picking up. On Lake Geneva the CGN sails from four city piers and on to Lausanne and Montreux, so you can go one way by boat and let the minibus bring you back.
Questions travellers ask
How much luggage fits?
Count suitcases as carefully as people. With every seat taken a minibus has limited room at the back, and a cruise party of twelve with large cases may need a midi-coach or a second vehicle.
Can the driver wait at the pier?
Rarely. Lucerne allows no waiting at its stops and Geneva publishes no stop at the piers, so the vehicle parks elsewhere and returns at the agreed time.
Do you book the boat as well?
No, the cruise or boat trip is yours to book. Lucerne's lake boats expect groups of 10 or more to book ahead, and the CGN has its own group service.
