Locarno and Lake Maggiore by Minibus
Locarno lies on Lake Maggiore, which it shares with Italy, with green valleys opening straight behind the town. Many of the best places are up narrow roads, which is exactly where a smaller vehicle with a local driver earns its keep.
Why smaller vehicles suit Ticino
Several roads around Locarno have size limits. The Centovalli road takes vehicles only up to 2.30 m wide between Intragna and the Italian border, and 10 m long, so a full-size coach cannot use it. The road up to Madonna del Sasso is for vehicles up to 10 m, and the Vallemaggia mountain roads have the same limit and no official coach parks.
Whether your minibus fits a given road is something the operator checks before the day.

Valle Verzasca without the stress
The Verzasca valley has its own rules for buses, set out in an official guide. Vehicles may be up to 12 m long. At the dam, Lavertezzo and Brione you have half an hour at most, and your driver must remain at the wheel. In Lavertezzo village the bus just lets you off, then moves 200 m up the valley to a turning area to wait.
Longer parking is possible only at Gerra Verzasca and Sonogno, and drivers avoid meeting the PostAuto on the narrow road. The Ponte dei Salti is about 30 minutes from Locarno.

Stopping in town
Coach parking is scarce. Locarno's one listed coach park is at the station in Muralto, a short walk from the Piazza Grande. Ascona's lists disagree and Brissago has no fixed spaces, so the operator confirms each stop with the town.
Islands, castles and a train to Italy
The Brissago Islands botanical garden is about 20 minutes by boat from Ascona, open from March to early November. The castles of Bellinzona are about 35 minutes by road, Lugano about 55.
For a day that feels like a holiday, ride the Centovalli railway to Domodossola, just under 2 hours over 83 bridges. Your driver goes round by Lake Maggiore and meets you there. Stresa and Como are each about 1.5 hours away.
