Off the Rhine ship and on your way: Basel by minibus
Your river cruise begins or ends in Basel, but the city has three landing stages, not one terminal. A minibus with a driver takes your small group and every suitcase from the gangway to the airport, the hotel or a first afternoon out.
First, which bank of the Rhine?
St. Johann is on the Grossbasel side, about ten minutes on foot from the old town, with the Marktplatz roughly 1 km away. Klybeckquai and Dreiländereck are across the river in the Kleinbasel port district, Dreiländereck near the corner where three countries touch.
The port keeps a berth plan, and a ship's stage can change. Look at your cruise documents, then send us the stage printed there along with the ship's name.

Where your driver meets you
No coach or minibus rules are published at the stages themselves. Basel's coach places are free but cannot be reserved, so the operator confirms the waiting point and you hear it before the day.
Every landing stage that leads to the hotel ships is step-free and can be reached by wheelchair, and St. Johann adds a lift and an escalator between the promenade and the quay. If someone in your party uses a wheelchair, ask for an accessible minibus when you book.
Where the boats tie up
- The cabin-ship berths are run by the Schweizerische Rheinhäfen (Port of Switzerland), which publishes a berth occupancy plan (Steigerbelegungsplan) showing which ship uses which landing stage
- Passagierbootterminal Dreiländereck, Westquaistrasse 39, 4057 Basel: in the Kleinhüningen port, near the point where Switzerland, France and Germany meet
- Plattform 2 Klybeckquai and Steiger Klybeckquai, Uferstrasse, 4057 Basel: in the Klybeck port district on the Kleinbasel (right) bank
- Passagierbootterminal St. Johann (landing stages Steiger 1 and Steiger 2), corner of St. Johanns-Ring and St. Johanns-Rheinweg, 4056 Basel: on the Grossbasel (left) bank of the Rhine, about ten minutes on foot from the city centre
Flights, trains and a first day out
EuroAirport is about 9 to 10 km away, around 15 minutes in light traffic. It stands in France, and your driver collects you from the Swiss side of the building. Zurich Airport is about 92 km, a little over an hour. For a train onwards, Basel SBB is a short ride: roughly 3 km if you berth at St. Johann, nearer 5.5 km from the two port stages.
With a spare day before or after the cruise, the Roman town of Augusta Raurica is about 14 km away and the Vitra Campus, just over the German border, about 8 km. Colmar is about an hour, and Lucerne about an hour and a half.
Questions travellers ask
How big a vehicle do we need?
Count people and cases together. A minibus carries 9 to 16 passengers, with little luggage room once every seat is taken. Twelve guests with large suitcases may be happier in a midi-coach.
Is EuroAirport in Switzerland?
No, it lies in France. Your driver comes up the customs road from Basel to the Swiss sector and waits there, because vehicles cannot drive between the two sectors on the airport site.
Can a day trip cross into France or Germany?
Yes. A Swiss-based vehicle may take your group over the border and back. The other country's road rules apply on its side, and the operator checks them before the trip.
