Lauberhorn race weekend: minibus to the valley, train up to Wengen

Three race days in Wengen, 15–17 January 2027: Friday's super-G, Saturday's downhill on 16 January, Sunday's slalom. Wengen has no road, so a minibus gets your group to the valley and the railway does the rest.

Two ways up to the finish

Wengen is reached only by the Wengernalp Railway from Lauterbrunnen, or from Grindelwald Terminal by the Männlichen cableway and on to the village. The organisers suggest both for the finish area in Innerwengen; for Wengernalp they route spectators through Eigergletscher and the Kleine Scheidegg. From Wengen station to the finish is about a 20-minute walk.

Where your driver drops you

From Interlaken Ost, Lauterbrunnen station is about 13 km, roughly 15 minutes, and Grindelwald Terminal about 20 km, around 25 minutes. Paid parking in Lauterbrunnen, Wilderswil and Grindelwald is in heavy demand on race days, which is one good reason to be dropped off rather than drive yourselves.

Your race tickets already cover the train from Interlaken Ost. If your group stays in Interlaken, you might ride the train on Saturday and keep the minibus for arrival, departure and a day off the slopes.

When and where

  • Lauberhorn, Wengen (Lauterbrunnen valley, Bernese Oberland); finish area (Zielarena) in Innerwengen
  • 15-17 January 2027: super-G on Friday 15 January, downhill on Saturday 16 January, slalom on Sunday 17 January; downhill training on 12-14 January 2027

Winter roads and airports

Lauterbrunnen is about 142 km from Zurich Airport, around two hours in light traffic, and about 223 km from Geneva Airport. In January the valley road is narrow, twisting and often icy or snowy. Swiss law sets no winter-tyre date, and chains are needed only where a sign demands them, and your driver allows extra time.

Questions travellers ask

Can the minibus drive us into Wengen?

No. No vehicle can. Your driver stops in Lauterbrunnen, at Grindelwald Terminal or at Interlaken Ost, and you continue by train or cableway.

When should we arrive on Saturday?

Early. The organisers recommend coming early by public transport on downhill day. Race start times are set by the organisers, so check them before planning the pick-up.

Are there training days too?

Yes, downhill training runs from 12 to 14 January 2027, a quieter time to see the course.
